*grabs a tissue box, hugging it tightly* Alright, I'm ready! If any writer can reduce me to a pile of tears, it would be you! So I'm ready! Give me your best! ... Soon, please?

Another gripping chapter. I think what Legolas feels is like knowing we must lose someone much older who is dear,to us mortals.

You have me wondering what those 2 Elves are plotting now !

Author's Response:

Thanks, Linda!

I think you are exactly right about Legolas; and he needs Aragorn to help him through this. The ranger is being stubborn at the moment, though. Usually, in my fics, it's the elf that's causing a problem, dunno why, but this time it's Aragorn's turn.

Next chapter is the worst, tissue-wise. Just a warning for a faithful and generous reviewer!

At first I thought this chapter would bring some peace to the story and allow my heart to rest in peace, but O no! not to be so! Lo! you steal forth again in some magical splendour and keep close the knife point to my heart! How could you have Legolas see that! Utter genius, you treacherous wonder! *laughs* My chest is restricting in agonized impatience! I love your original characters... they are so neatly rounded and the depth of emotion and physicality is purely astounding! I love your work, and this story has failed in one thing, and that alone— to disappoint me.

Elemmírë

Author's Response:

Elemmire, as one of my most faithful reviewers, I must warn you for the next chapter. You will need many, many tissues (at least I hope so, if I have done my job correctly). However, that chapter is the worst from that standpoint. Thank you as *always* for your praise for my writing.

Oh, what a tender and tragic story this is turning out to be! Absolutely beautiful. I don't even want to guess what the end results of Lenwe's actions will be...my goodness, but I feel for all involved.

And the fact that Aragorn won't talk to Legolas about his future death? That's a stroke of genius, and your reasons behind his unwillingness to discuss this with Legolas are very believable, given Aragorn's position. Marvelously done, and it was my great pleasure to read this update. I look forward to the next one most eagerly.

Annette

Author's Response:

Thanks so much, Annette. In my 'young Estel' stories, I deal with the mortality of Aragorn from Legolas' veiwpoint - it always seemed to me the more poignant. But this time I wanted to know how Argagorn would deal with those issues as they relate to his friendship with an elf.

Hanky warning for the next chapter. So you can bail out if you want to!

This has be utterly gripped! I wonder what concerns Legolas? I hope Aragorn will change his mind about escorting the Elves to Rivendell.

I like the way Lenwe tries to prepare Nienor, losing a loved one is very hard.

Author's Response:

Thanks, Linda!    I'm so pleased that you like the first few chapters, as I was afraid everyone would fall asleep before they got to the 'good' parts.

Nienor is one of those characters that you create for a specific purpose, but then start to have their own ideas and personality. Now I'm rather fond of him, and feel a little guilty for the wringer I'm putting him through. Not too guilty, though!

thanks again,

Oh, my, what a complex tale you are weaving! I love that Legolas sees the closeness of Lenwe and Nienor, and compares it to the closeness between himself and Aragorn. A deep friendship, and something rare and precious--something that most of us never know.

I do admit to wanting to smack Aragorn for not deciding to help the two elves, for they greatly need him. Perhaps he will see the need in the end, perhaps not. And what will Legolas say to his decision? I suspect he will not be happy at all...

A lovely update, and it was a lovely treat for me after a long, hot day. Thank you, as always, for sharing your work. :-)

Annette, aka kestrels

Author's Response:

Thanks,  Annette, for seeing the main point in this fic. It's really about Legolas and Aragorn, rather than Lenwe and Nienor, although they are the focus point around which the other three ('cause Kenuric gets involved in the drama as well) work out the their own issues. Aragorn can't take the elves to Imladris because - well, he just can't or he'd wreck the whole story! :-)

Marvelous, again! I am so confused now! What is wrong with Legolas, and is Lenwë going to die before he leaves? What is going to happen to Nienor! O! piercing! I must know soon! I am so glad the chapter is out now! I nearly wilted waiting. (Aye, I am very impatient) What is so wrong with the Halls? This is a chapter that raises more questions then answers, sticklebacks! Why?

Absolutely wonderfully written! I think you may find you will need to hold together some shattered hearts yourself! How you make me feel for Neinor, and not just him, but all the characters! Still, amidst the melancholy tone, you manage to keep smiles blooming! "... and looked so fierce that those who wanted a word with him found other tasks and looked very busy indeed." You are a wonderment, by any account! More, soon, please!

Author's Response:

Sorry, Elemmire, I thought I had already responded to your reviews for this story.

For this story I used the fannon notion that the Halls are a cold and bleak place where one is isolated and faced with past misdeeds until a proper remorse is demonstrated.  That's not the only view of Mandos' Halls, and I use whichever one works for a particular story. I didn't want Lenwe to just say, "Well, I'll be going now. See you in the Halls, dear boy!" like it was a country club or something.

Yes, the plot is thickening and as we go, except for chapter 5, the emphasis moves to Legolas and Aragorn. And Kenuric, who has plenty to say in his snarky way about the whole situation! I hope you continue to enjoy the story. Once the angst gets going, I really*am* going to post the rest all at once.

*reads responses greedily* Oi! Why must you tease poor little me with such lovely comments and hinting! I want the whole story right now! Right now! I do not know if I can wait much longer, and I just read the thing yesterday! (Of course I am going to enjoy the rest! Whenever do I not? I'll just enjoy it more sooner) It is so good, you must know! And yes, I love to see Kenuric again. I love it when you have old characters resurface! And you are so marvelous at using all the new people and the old! (I will probably just look up Lenwë to pass the time)

Sensational! Superb! Ai! how can it end here? The distressing thought that I cannot continue is so- uh! Why must you do that? Will we have more soon? I beg it is so!

Aragorn is so masterfully portrayed, and Legolas is so lovable in the way he is with Nienor, and then Kenuric! The dear old badger! He has some of the best parts! There are no loose ends— everything is fit and neat and excitingly vibrant, so there can be no complaint. I despair for Lenwë (must look him up!), and wonder after Nienor, vainly trying to understand where you are taking this. It is so amazing!

Author's Response:

Hi Elemmire -

I'm glad you're pleased to see Kenuric again! He has a major part of this fic, even more as time goes on. Don't worry about looking up Lenwe, since I took him AU once he was wandering, and wiped out the poor elf's family without a second's thought. I'm glad you like Nienor and Legolas together, as they also have some angst coming between the two of them. Not much hope for Lenwe, although he is too wise and wiley to leave Arda without some plans being made.

Hope you enjoy the rest!

My heart is beginning to pound as I am sorting through many different roads you can choose to take this on... Kenuric is back! I was so excited I nearly fell out of my seat when I saw the name in the summary! This looks to be yet another amazing story! The bursts of humour and the enraging teasings of mystery... *shudders* it's fantastic and splendid! I must continue! (I was beginning to wonder about Nienor, but the note clears that away)

Oh, a nice beginning, to be sure. I have to say that I really, really like your *ranger Aragorn*. Marvelous.

And Fidelis...a strong name for a story. I am waiting anxiously how this story continues. :)

Author's Response:

Thank  you, Imaginigma. This story starts off slowly, but it was fun to show 'a day in the life of a healer' for Aragorn. The name seemed obvious to me after  the story was finished, as I hope you will agree! :-)

I am enjoying story very, very much, my friend. I loved the scene of Aragorn healing Lenwe, and how he stayed quiet, being wise enough to know that he could say nothing to the elf that he did not already know. I also love how Nienor and Legolas have bonded, and how you let the Aragorn/Legolas friendship show through, even though the story is not focused on it at this moment.

I continue to enjoy how you are building the relationship between Aragorn and Kenuric, and I love how you keep Kenuric in character, showing how difficult he can be, while at the same time, showing us how caring of a healer/person he really is.

And Nienor! He's a marvelous character. Writing his responses and showing his personality through only his actions is not an easy thing, and you do it beautifully.

I see a tragic ending coming here (maybe I'm wrong?) but I also see a beautiful story of friendship, devotion, and love.

I look forward to the next update! Thanks again for sharing your work!

Annette

Author's Response:

Thanks again, Annette.

Yes, there is tragedy coming, for at least one character, but I'm not giving away more than that :-) However, I don't like hopeless or sad endings, and I don't think that this one will be . Certainly not for our 'main guys'.

You are a wonderful reviewer, not only because you are kind, but because you hit on all the stuff that an author hopes will be appreciated or understood. I'm glad you like Nienor - I was afraid he would come off as too perfect, but I wanted to show a more 'fairy-like' elf, one really too fragile for the hard, cruel world, yet able to love with all his heart.

A very grateful,

Pentangle

Hi Marie, that makes two reviews in one day from you - another great compliment that I am eating up!

The votes are definitely in favor of Kenuric, and while there is Kenuric-Aragorn angst to come, there are more snarky moments, too.

As it happens, I am waiting for the second half of the fic from my wonderful beta, but when I get it back, I am thinking of posting the whole thing here, for those who prefer to read that way. It will probably be a couple weeks before that happens, but that's better than the couple of months it will take to post week by week. Whining works beautifully with me - I'm so glad you *want* to read it!

Wow, but I'm now dying with curiosity! Who are these two elves, and where are they from? What a marvelous beginning to your story, for I'm completely hooked! I'm also happy to see Kenuric again, for I enjoyed "The Taming of the Badger" very much. I look forward to more chapters in this tale with great anticipation!

Author's Response:

Annette, thanks so much for the review.  I'm especially glad that you're happy to see Kenuric again; I was afraid people would be tired of him. Be warned, this fic is my angstiest yet; a multiple tissue box fic (I hope!). The angst goes in a lot of different directions: Legolas-Aragorn, Aragorn-Kenuric, Kenuric-Legolas, and so on!

It's nice to see that Kenuric and Aragorn now have a more relaxed relationship.  They seem to work well together.

I am thrilled clear down to my toes to see another multi-part story from you.  Will it help if I beg you not to draw it out and post the whole thing?  Huh?  Huh?  Will it?  Whiiiine.

If that didn't convince you, I will TRY to wait patiently for the rest.
