ROTFL! A rotten potato soaked in buttermilk indeed - a very apt description of skunk perfume! I suppose Aragorn's mortal senses grew used to in in time, but bearing in mind the elvish more finely-tuned bodily functions, I wonder if the same can be said of them? No wonder they wished to move their unwanted visitor right along out of the valley!
Still chuckling here .. . this was a fun read!
Author's Response: Glad you enjoyed it Tanis! That is a valid thought, about the elves nose remaining sensative. A gentleman I know told a story once about trying to see how close he could get to a dead skunk (he was about 6 at the time) and he was able to get right up to the skunk, but by the time he nose was brushing the skins fur (let me repeat, 6 years old...) he could not smell anything. So senses of smell do die, or go numb, if they are bombarded! And they do fade, it would not be possible to be aware of every stimulus all the time. Imagine being always aware of the clothes against you skin, and never being able to stop knowing about it! That is what Autism does. Normally, even nice things, like bread baking, fades aftera few minutes. Sadly.
But you are right, the way I portray it is a bit of a stretch.
